How to Stay Relevant in a Crowded Marketplace

Are your ideal clients clamoring for YOU?

A few years ago I was backstage at a big event, hanging out with the other speakers and (as we often do) talking shop. One speaker, a well known internet marketing expert, said something to me I’ll never forget.

The topic had to do with the directions our businesses were taking. She was adding in a big dose of social media training and consulting to her mix, along with other online visibility strategies. Then she peered at me with a slightly nervous look and confessed, “Well, you’ve got to stay RELEVANT!”

Stay relevant.

The fear in her eyes told all. But, both she and I knew she was right.

The dictionary definition of relevant is “bearing upon or connected with the matter in hand; pertinent: a relevant remark.” It’s all about what people need NOW in an ever changing world of tactics, strategies, and solutions.

The good news is, you don’t have to go into fear mode to address staying relevant. It’s an ongoing job of seeing where you are, where your prospects are, what the winds of change are blowing your way, and of course where your passion is directing you.

In business terms, you can break it down in a few ways.

1. OFFERS: Is what you’re offering solving an immediate and pressing problem your client faces? Are your offers matching their needs TODAY?

2. MARKETING: Are you using the best tools to reach your ideal clients?

3. MESSAGE: Are you wording things in such a way that prospective clients stop, look, and swear you’re talking DIRECTLY to them?

4. NETWORK: Are you hanging with a relevant network? Are your connections connected to the right opportunities for you?

5. PERSPECTIVE: How are you keeping a perspective on all the changes swirling about? This might mean having a mentor in your life to help you see what you can’t see, following people who are on the cutting edge, or somehow being tuned into what’s shifting around you.

Important Note: This isn’t about jumping on the latest fad or changing yourself in a way that doesn’t suit you. Relevance and Flightiness are not interchangeable! More often than not, it’s a simple tweak to one or more of the areas outlined above that can save your business and keep you on the map.

So where do you go from here?

This is what I do:

  • I stay awake. Awake to what’s happening around me, awake to what’s bugging me in marketing, awake to what’s overused and overhyped. To me, that spells “go the opposite way” and I high tail it out of any party that’s feeling clone-ish.
  • I never walk alone. Maybe you can operate in a vacuum, but not me. I need other professionals working at a high level to serve as sounding boards, trouble-shooters, idea machines. That’s why I mentor others, that’s why others mentor me.
  • I take risks. Entrepreneurs love taking risks and trying new things. Sometimes they pay off, sometimes they don’t. But like the Lotto, you can’t win if you don’t play.
  • I keep it fun. If it’s not fun, I won’t do it. I want to find the coolest way to stay relevant and build buzz for my biz. Maybe that means I throw out a shocking title every now and then, maybe it means I drop something I’m known for (bye bye social media consulting!) Find what makes it fun for you.

Make staying relevant your mantra for this year’s business plan. For those of you looking for a personalized intensive, talk to me about private coaching. Take this step if you’re ready and serious about your success.

As always, I’d love your thoughts on this topic. What are your concerns about relevance? Does this topic strike a note with you?

    Hey Nancy,

Great post and “relevant” is definitely the word of the year — this year and every year.

Google made yet more changes last week to their algorithms and those changes reward those who are relevant to their ideal clients.  Those who are “flighty” will be relegated to the back of search engine searches.

And with “relevant”, I’d add “consistent”.  It doesn’t help you to be relevant today and two months from now. . .you need to be consistently relevant within your industry and to your ideal clients.

The easiest way to do this?  Create a plan — one which keeps you focused while allowing you to take advantage of any opportunities which come up.

    With abundance,

    Sandy :-)

Thanks Sandy! I’ll take “consistently relevant” for duo words of the year. Appreciate (as always) your insights.

Great article Nance. I’d like to add one more thing to do — keep an eye on what’s working and what’s not working. Don’t just look at what’s feeling clone-ish and head the other way, also study what DOES seem to be working. And when I mean study it, I mean study it. Why is it working? What is it doing to satisfy a need in people vs something else that isn’t working? (Hint — this is a really good start on how you study trends too — what better way to be relevant than to the first on an “up-and-coming” trend and first off a spiraling one?)

Absolutely! Studying why people respond to things is (for some of us) such fun. You totally get it… big smile!

You’re loved right back, Kathleen! The way you help women is big time relevant.

Great article, Nancy. I like how you talk about the fear factor of becoming “irrelevant” and I think this is what leads some business owners astray. When we operate from fear, it’s easy to get seduced by all the “shoulds” out there. “You should get into mobile media marketing” or random stuff like “Video is hot right now and you use video on your site so you should teach others about using video…”

So instead of figuring out how to stay relevant in their chosen field, they start to move in directions that aren’t in line with what they’re passionate about and is fun for them. When you love what you do, figuring out how to stay relevant is a pleasure, not a chore.

Thanks for reminding us to “stay awake” and have fun.

Relevant – what a great word!
Delivering what is pertinent, germane, applicable.  Love it.
Making a difference doesn’t happen unless you are relevant.   You,
Nancy, are definitely Relevant.  Am so
glad I never have to walk alone – thanks to you and several others who have
    posted here!

Grateful for this post. I especially loved that you didn’t leave out the importance of having fun! I am so attracted to teachers who are obviously enjoying their lives and their work. :-)

Thanks Kim. Decisions made from fear are never a good way to go. And “should” is always a tricky word too! Getting in touch with what makes you happy and keeps your clients excited is key.

Very interesting and good advice – relevant is the WORD I shall hang on to that.

    Nancy-

    Great post!

It is interesting to me as I come from a law background where “relevant” is vital to a lawsuit and being able to admit evidence into court. I “defected” from the practice of law many years ago to start become an entrepreneur (celebrating my 10 year anniversary in biz this year – yes!) and never really thought about relevance as it relates to my business.

Very interesting… much more positive than the way relevance is used in law. Relevance in law is based on hard and fast rules, whereas relevance in business seems to be constantly changing based on the environment and world around us. Love how you said that you “stay awake”! That seems to be key… if a business owner is sleeping at the wheel, he/she will become irrelevant mighty quick!

Thanks for the thought-provoking post. :-)

    Warmly – Lisa

Thanks for bringing the legal context of this into the discussion, Lisa. Years ago I dated a guy while he was in law school and I’m pretty sure I could have passed the bar simply by osmosis learning.

Congrats on your 10 year anniversary in business, you really can’t stay in business that long if what you’re offering isn’t relevant.

Thanks again for chiming in, your opinions are always welcome.
