Without the ability to be distinctive, you land in the pool of lookalikes and the effort required to get clients will be all that more frustrating.
Case Study: Nice Woman… Wrong Business
I recently spoke to a woman who was clearly in the wrong business… but she didn’t realize it. Actually she thought she was in two different businesses: one had to do with coaching women to assume leadership roles in business and life, the other had to do with helping non-profits do fundraising.
During our coaching conversation, we worked on the beginning phases of her Profitable Essence(tm), the inner core of a person’s talents and mission that can be easily parlayed into a profitable offer.
Her real business, we discovered, was teaching people (particularly women) how to ask for money.
Much of her leadership coaching was geared towards professional women looking to climb the career ladder (and needing to ask for raises and promotions), entrepreneurial women looking to fill their businesses with clients (will that be Visa or American Express?), and other money centered conversations.
Between non-profits and women leaders, similar issues came up about money. Feelings of deserving, scarcity, fear, abundance, old beliefs… and that is how we saw that her business was to speak to and teach about asking for money.
What’s Your Profitable Essence(tm)?
In a previous post, I wrote about how programs and blueprints may be killing your business if you don’t have this Profitable Essence(tm) piece in place. It’s your unique fingerprint in the marketplace.
If a coach or consultant comes up to me and shares that her business is not doing well AND she’s invested heavily in costly programs and formulas, then I’m 99.9% sure there’s a big old missing piece. Put that piece in place and THEN dive into the many systems and programs designed to bring you success. As I wrote in a prior post, it’s putting the 4th leg on the table so you quit tipping over.
