Be Sociable- Get Out There and Mingle!

dancers

Social media success can’t happen if you’re glued to the wall simply waiting for the action to happen. It didn’t work like that on the first day of kindergarten, it didn’t work like that at your high school dance, and it doesn’t work that way on Twitter.

At some point you have to go out there and mingle, but it doesn’t have to be a painful experience. If shooting the breeze with your Tweeps sounds out of your comfort zone, then here are 3 really easy things you can do to get in the mix without feeling like the 5th wheel on a conversation.

1. Retweet

This is the easiest and most painless way to mingle. You simply repurpose someone else’s Tweet by retweeting it. It’s always nice to add a little comment too if you can squeeze it in, even if it’s just a ubiquitous “LOL” or a w00t!

2. Harmless 1 Word Responses

Maybe you feel like you’re going to say something really stupid, so you just keep quiet. If that’s your fear, then just try a harmless 1 word response from time to time. Someone posts something, you hit reply and leave a single word “Cool”, “Funny”, “Great”… you get the idea. Think of this as a bridge to bigger conversations. It gets you in the mix without having to say too much. (Don’t rely on this as your only conversational strategy)

3. Ask a Direct Question

You can always try asking someone a question. “What do you think about ….” is a good way to start. It can be about any topic, the idea behind this is to create the opportunity for engagement.

Whether you consider yourself an introvert or an extrovert, we all need a little encouraging from time to time to get into the mix. When you find yourself glued to the wall wanting to be in the conversation, try one of these 3 approaches.

Easy, concise, and to the point! I remember being a wall flower at Jr. High dances and scared to take that first step. With your great advice here, everyone can feel comfortable about mingling!

I love the way your tips make it all sound so easy. As a social media "newbie" and general technophobe they help me to at least make a start.

I learned some of those lessons as I was getting used to using Twitter (now in my third year). No one will reTweet you if you don't do it for other people from time to time too.

Warren, thanks for demonstrating the power of a 1 word response! :-)

Carla, you're truly a seasoned user and it's great to bring more voices of experience into the mix.

Ali and Carole, hang on and take action. You'll thank yourself as you go along.

Melanie, you're anything but a wallflower now! Your Tweets rock.
