Whether you sell coaching services or info products… Whether you sell copywriting or social media expertise… Whether you’re a floral designer or IT consultant… You need somebody to buy.

And to get those to buy, you need a list. After all, it’s the list that is who you can easily sell to again and again.

But if you’re just starting out, how are you going to get your target market to give you their contact details? There’s a lot of internet marketing techniques that can help. From article marketing to ezines, from free special reports to Adword campaigns – every one of them can add people to your list. They are great as a long-term system consistent process, but often times, quite slow in generating leads.

The key to creating a list quickly – and effectively – is to create a specific promotion that your target market wants to be a part of.

A promotion is publicity technique that uses a special event or special circumstances that creates a buzz both online and offline to motivate your target market to do something  -  in this case, willingly become part of your email list.

Here are some creative ways to use promotion in your list building activities:

1) Hop on a holiday. Offer a special freebie as part of a holiday celebration. There’s always a holiday around the corner, so don’t miss this opportunity to create a list-generating promotion around it.

2) I won! Create different contests for different niche markets  and provide a much-wanted prize for the winner. Of course, part of the entry requirement would be signing up to your list!

3) Membership has its privileges. Allow your potential customer to become a part of an exclusive club, with freebies, coupons and other membership benefits.

4) The survey says. Asking your target market to take a survey to measure their own results compared to others can be extremely effective. A great example of this is Karner Blue Marketing’s The Website Checkup at http://www.thewebsitecheckup.com

5) Birthday Bonanza! Give a birthday gift/coupon to anyone who signs up to your special “birthday” list.

You should always send out a few press releases about your promotion to the media, who will spread the word even further to build your list.

  • Thanks for sharing these great ideas on how to offer something to my clients that is of value and tying it into something fun. I have used the birthday bonanza special and have had great response to it. I always like being able to give back to my list. They are loyal and supportive. Letting them know how much I appreciate them is important.
  • Thanks for this article. I am always looking to add to my list, and I have a couple of new ideas today.
