Getting radio publicity for your business – part 1

by Guest Blogger, Shannon Cherry

Last time, I explained that if you are looking for publicity, you don’t want to miss out using the radio.
Read it here!

Now let me share with you exactly how to get publicity from the radio.

Before you do anything else, you need to start developing  your angle or pitch. And that means customizing a message to win them over that  you are a terrific person to interview.

If you want to get a radio professional’s attention, you need to make sure whatever you propose as your topic is:

  • Controversial. Producers have a weakness for anything that gets their telephones going. And nothing does the trick like a good debate.
  • Entertaining. If you can make your prospects laugh and tell them interesting stories, you’ll always be in demand as a radio person to interview.
  • Informative. Give people helpful, timely information. Present them stuff that makes them say, ‘Wow! That’s amazing! I didn’t know that!’
  • Or a combination of the three.

Your first step is to come up with topic ideas that are interesting, fun, controversial, new or unusual. But the key is that your topic is appealing to the listeners.

Don’t focus on the product or service you’re hoping to promote. Instead, think about the problem you can solve and explain why you are the one with the best solution.

These are the top most appealing subjects to frame your topic around:

  • Sex and relationships
  • Saving money
  • School violence
  • Corruption
  • Sexual harassment
  • Health and fitness
  • Hollywood & celebrities
  • Sports
  • Making money
  • Travel

Now begin thinking about your subject matter of knowledge you’d like to talk about.  Can it relate to one, or more, of the subjects listed?   If it does, that’s great.

If not, try to rethink your subject – or a related subject – that can fit into one of the categories.

You can also go to http://www.Talkers.com, which list the hot topics that radio people are talking about.  Check this list often, so you can tailor your pitches based on current events.

Next time, I’ll share with you how to pitch radio professionals to get exposure.

Thanks Shannon, I'm sure everyone is now trying to figure out how to weave a little more sex into their marketing angle! You bring up an important point:"Don’t focus on the product or service you’re hoping to promote. Instead, think about the problem you can solve and explain why you are the one with the best solution."People still don't get that it isn't about them… or at least you can't pitch it that way. Great post as always!

    Shannon,
That is very interesting… I didn't realize that people had to repurpose their message to conform to the top 10 topics. Of course, I also don't listen to much radio, except for the talk radio in my area, but they do stay on top of the headlines and find a lot of topics that keep people calling in.
I will definitely have to start looking at the controversial side of my message.
    Thanks for a great series!
    Micheal
