Lisa, thanks for the great response. I always appreciate it when readers leave such thoughtful replies. The Dan Hollings quote is staying on my mind:

“Followers are fiction. Listeners are fact. The goal is mre fact than fiction.”

Classic!

As a target marketing coach myself, I think there are a couple of disconnects here.

First, how did you end up following so many spammers in the first place? If you're using an autofollow device, well, you get what you pay for. I have a strict set of rules for who I follow, and do my follows manually - and nary a bit of spam crosses my screen - and I follow well over 1200 people.

That said, inside my tweetstream, I'll see promotional offers from all kinds of people - including several people that posted on this page.

And because of the short-livedness of tweets, it is not a horrible terrible mean and nasty thing to do to send out periodic reminders. I'll usually send out 4 tweets within an hour before my upcoming teleclass that generates easily 2-3 dozen more subscribers. Those 4 tweets may be spam to you, but they obviously weren't for the 30-40 people that wanted that information.

I think the key to remember is balance. no one wants to be pitched/offered all the time, but when you have something of value to your followers, you shouldn't be remiss in letting them know.

Also, consider your goals with twitter. If it's purely a social one (which I doubt, considering your business is marketing), then that's one thing. But it should never be about ading more followers just for the sake of having more followers - or again, you get what you pay for.

Excellent article and so true. I usually stop following someone that is taking up the page with spam or constantly tweeting the same Get Rich Quick slogan. I am bookmarking your blog and look forward to reading more from you..
Have a great day, Cheryl

Hey Nancy, damn right! There's a small % who get it right but I have to admit I'm so jaded with all the high flying social media gurus promoting, promoting, promoting all the time. Lost some respect for many as a result.

There is a fine balance between linking to your latest blog post (I do that!) and hawking your stuff all the time. I'm 90% social and engaging and inspiring, 10% links and RTing!

I didn't read all the comments above, will go do them now.

ps: URL reads as URI above .. is that something new I don't know about? ;)

Therese,
it takes patience but it's worth every bit of effort! The work you do is so powerful, people can't make decisions based on a 140 character pitch. But engaging in conversation and info sharing will communicate better the gifts you bring. That can be done in 140 characters.

We still need to make offers, we still need to give people the opportunity to invest in a solution for their problems (ie, buy from us). This is so much about timing and whether you've established a strong relationship with your followers.

Yesterday I just went through and stopped following everyone on twitter that just "pitches" at me. They actually have stopped me becoming their fan. Now I have a new policy that I only follow those that add value or sharing something worth following.

Dear Nancy, you have done it again.......
Stepped up and created a very cool and powerful conversation.

I'm waiting for that "Tipping Point" where those of us who practice conscious marketing and bring tons of integrity to the table will finally be in the majority. And you will be one of the leaders my beautiful friend. You, and the amazing army of Thought Leaders that you are helping to develop.

Rock on, sister!
