Inc Magazine and Twitter’s Biz Stone, I Stand Corrected

Oh yummy, a nice big slice of humble pie dished up for me by the kind editors of Inc Magazine and Twitter co-founder Biz Stone!

What can I say, I gave up wheat in January and the detox process may have impaired my good judgment when it comes to thinking before spewing off my opinion in a snarky tirade.

It all began with an intense back and forth with the Tweeples on proper Twitter terminology.

We Tweet… or do we Twitter?

Are you Tweeting… or are you Twittering?

Maybe you’re rolling your eyes wondering “Who cares?” but it REALLY mattered to me one day in March as I was reading a short article in Inc Magazine titled “We Asked, You Twittered”.

I was appalled at their use of Twitter as a verb, as anyone detoxing from wheat who has a slight obsession with Twitter and advocates for the cause for Tweet as a verb. It was the perfect storm…

I don’t know what got into me, but I became inebriated with the illusion of being right, making it a point to aggressively advocate for the Tweet as a verb camp.

I ran over to my computer, fired off what I thought was a witty (albeit sarcastic) note to Inc Magazine. Sarcastic wit matched with self righteousness is never a good combination. I wrote:

Calling your story “We Asked, You Twittered” [March] was like Alice on the Brady Bunch waving a peace sign to Marcia and Greg- not a lot of street cred.

I was so taken aback with Bradymania, my good sense became blindsided. I could have taken a journalistic turn for the better at this point by stating this was merely my opinion and one shared by hordes of Tweeters, but the evil snarky shadow self I reserve only for people who cut me off on the freeways and threaten my offspring came out full force.

I decided to speak not just for myself and those who share my opinion, I chose to speak on behalf of the TENS OF MILLIONS of Twitter users.

Yeah, big shoes to fill and perfectly poised for the ultimate takedown as I continued:

In the Twitterverse, we “tweet” about things; we don’t “Twitter” about subjects.

Like I went to college and majored in Twitter terminology, right? Just wait it gets better. I could have stopped there, already having dragged the ever-loving Ann B. Davis in the mix. But not only do I want to prove myself to be the school marm of Twitter, I now take Inc Magazine over my knee for a good spanking:

I realize that the world of Web 2.0 terminologies moves fast, but for a magazine purporting to be on the cutting edge, it’s important to get the lingo down.

(It seemed so apparent they needed help in understanding Twitter, especially after I checked their Twitter profile and it was anemic in its numbers. But that will be for another post, I’m still unraveling my own personal train wreck.)

They responded by flipping me over and pinning me to the mat:

We decided to check directly with Twitter co-founder Biz Stone on this pressing matter.

Oh crap, I think as I read this. Those f***ers! Why didn’t I think to consult the source? Having a Chris Farley meets Paul McCartney moment. The rebuttal continues:

Stone responded in an email:

“Ultimately, whatever gets used more will probably win out, but twittering is the verb that refers to the act of creating a tweet, which is the noun. However you may catch me tweeting one day so don’t hold me to that!”

Do you love what a stand up guy Biz is? Not wanting to get in the jargon wars, he took the high road and was probably thinking “Why are they asking me stupid questions when I have a web phenomenon on my plate?”

So what have I learned as I reach for a toothpick to get the final bits of crow feathers out from my smile?

Words aren’t worth fighting over. Me, a writer and reformed English teacher should know better. I’m a lover, not a fighter. Let’s all just get along, OK?

New stance: I’m Pro-Tweeting, not Anti-Twittering.

My publicist pal Shannon Cherry suggested I start a Tweet is a Verb movement and carry on the crusade.

I may do that, but first I am going to get a doggy bag for  this yummy piece of humble pie in the hopes that my unchecked self-will can remember the lessons of Tweeting, Twittering, and firing off emails  before acknowledging the whole sprectrum of opinions.

Thank God for your fiery search even if it got you the Humble Pie of the year award – You gained tons of visibility, credibility and the attention of the Inc Mag big wigs, not to mention Biz Stone.

Start what you must, and include us in your pie, even if it's a Humble one. We all win in visibility, credibility and publicity…and what you will gain….Priceless!

    Nancy –

I loved this post! It may have been worth eating humble pie for you to write such an inspiring comic rant at yourself.

And for me this is especially cautionary as someone who taught copyediting at Temple University Center City in the '70s — I tend to correct people's English. I also thought it was tweeting and not twittering. Oh, dear, I'll be careful.

    Thanks for sharing.

Nice "mea culpa"! A few years back, I bought a book about English called "Eats, Shoots and Leaves." I've been a stickler all my life, and I was pretty "on it" after reading this book — until The New Yorker published a fairly scathing review in which a myriad of errors were revealed. I've gotten better at just letting these things go, although I still visibly cringe when I receive an instant message or direct "tweet" saying "your right" instead of "you're right."

    Hi Nancita

I enjoyed your post – and can easily imagine you in that outraged place fuelled by wheat withdrawal. In my classes advocate something called a "tone check" in which you send anything you've written on a topic you feel strongly about to someone uninvolved who can provide a better assessment of how your message will land, once it's sent into orbit. Saved my bacon a time or two.

In the end, it doesn't matter if we Tweet or Twitter – the point is to say something worth reading. (I'm finding less and less of that in Twitter. Too much selling.)

    Cheers – Susanna

  • http://www.shahtraining.com Parth

Wow, I'm just shocked. Never thought there was a difference between tweeting and twittering. But this was a great post, and it actually shows the power of twitter. To have a magazine respond to you like that is quite something. I'm not sure what your reach is (probably a LOT), but it's still quite something. And then having the source respond to the question is something else. I dunno much about emerging technologies cuz their emerging way too fast. But anyways, this was an interesting post.

I looked at your email and thought long and hard. Was it spam? Was it a sales pitch? Was I going to regret clicking on it.

Obviously I stopped procrastinating. Great piece. Fun to read. It is indeed so easy to go over the top with passion for one's own viewpoint, and forget to be humble. So easy to get excited as you so poignantly describe.

I imagine your post will be quoted as a classic of its type, a fine example of turning adversity into advantage.

When I read your remarks about why you might have been so adamant, I smiled and didn't take the possibility seriously. But, on reflection, I don't know enough about you to dismiss the idea that you may indeed have been so influenced. The organism is so complex. How do we know that we may not be acting as a result of such apparently unconnected forces.

I've heard of Blogging wars. (Actively participate in one) I've hear of Forum wars. (Use to participate in those) but a Twitter war is something all new and shows how technology has changed.

We all want to be right, it's human nature, and to be called out for being wroo….wrrrr….wwwwwr….(NUTS) "mistaken" can really wreak havoc on ones ego.

I admire the way you handled this Nancy and kudos to you for doing the right thing. We can all use a little humble pie every once in a while. By doing so, it makes you the better person. I know, been there, done that, got a T-shirt that says so.

Thank you Nancy for trying to put terminology in order!

By the way, I am an admirer of your writings.

Perhaps you could use your (Twitter)prestige to determine what is the essence and power of Twitter:

    a) the power of diversity- in which I believe deeply

    b) the "wisdom of crowds"- in my opinion a fake concept used to belittle the Experts and replace them with some statistical manipulation. I think Wisdom of Crowds is one bastard of democracy- it's father is Populism and I suspect

it was a case of rape.

Do not let Twitter to be a citadel of thie kind of wisdom!

  • http://www.changeartistcoaching.com Sheryl Brown

Great to use nouns as verbs – adds versatility and variety. That way to tweet could be to make a punctiliar exclamation, like an overt "Ha!" and to twitter could be to emit a more subdued pattering (twittering) in the background, like a chuckling "Heheheheh…."

(And that reminds me of visiting a turkey farm, but I'll abstain in this comment!)

Yummy humble pie – you serve it up so wittily, Nancy! (I do hope adverbizing that one passes muster.)

I can not tell you how many times I have found myself in a similar situation from yours. The only thing you can do is let it go and keep on moving (another Brady Bunch moment for those of you who remember their song "Keep on Moving" LOL. Not much else to do, but let it ride. You'll be fine!!

    Hey Nance,

This was the funniest thing I’ve read in a long time. And what’s even funnier is you were the one who corrected ME on twittering and tweeting (I detest saying tweeting, I think it sounds silly not to mention requiring more explanation then twittering). So all I have to say is Thank God I can go back to saying twittering, and you are a rock star for using this as a fantastic visibility tool. Luv ya!

I was just curious. Seeing as how we are on the "correct use of the word" path, are people who "twitter", therefore "tweeting" called "Twits"?

    Hi Nancy,

I am rolling with laughter about this post! I loved it! If you start a "pro-tweeting" or "tweet is a verb" movement, sign me up! I refuse to say "I'm Twittering"! It doesn't have the "right" feel.

Just like "spark" is both a verb and a noun, so is "tweet" a verb and a noun.

I'm tweetin' with my tweeples on Twitter and I'm not twitterin' around! (ok, that was corny but I couldn't resist!)

Thanks for speaking out for me even when I didn't know you were doing it!

BTW, save me a piece of pie if that's what it takes to stand up and be counted!

[...] While I was on my way to Impact in Orlando last week, I got a request for help from good friend and visibility expert Nancy Marmolejo, who felt she got a little ’slap’ from the editors at Inc. Magazine, who published her letter to the editor about Twitter – and added their own comments with the help of Twitter co-founder Biz Stone.  (Come on, is that really his name?) Read all about it at Nancy’s blog here. [...]

    Hi Nancy

I think it’s great the way you are so upfront about eating humble pie. A lot of us don't have the courage to do it privately let alone out there publicly!

I think the twitter debate has now spread across the Atlantic. I caught the tail end of a discussion on the morning BBC news programme the other day that was all about the right terminology to describe people who use Twitter.

Keep on raising the bar Nancy with your energy and humour -we need you!

    Hi Nancy,

What you experienced is true of most people that are going through any form of detox. You are more on edge and likely to over-respond to trivial things. The typical good sense you display just goes out the window, along with all the toxins you are dumping from your body. Fortunately, you have a strong support group and a wonderful community of tweeple who know, like and trust you.

So much for perfection. Imagine what would have happened if you did that when having a "bad hair day." LOL

  • http://www.imagespecialist.com Marlys Arnold

Kudos to you for fessing up and eating that pie! I've learned over the years to always write, then sleep on it before sending, but I certainly understand the impulses! Look at it this way: at least you got the conversation started, and in a very public forum!

It's lovely to come back and read all the comments and connected blog from Shannon Cherry.

Not that it matters much, even to me, I'm inclined to use "twittering" because it conjures up birdsong in my mind. I like to think of people who twitter as song-singers, with a light air.

If you ever come to Ireland, please look me up.

I love it when someone like you goes off their rocker a little, because the results are going to be hilarious.

One of my favorite characters was played by Holly Hunter in Broadcast News. She marched in to tell off her boss, and he responded by saying, "It must be hard to be so right all the time."

Her response? An emotional and honest one, in her opinion. Something like, "It's not hard, it's awful!"

Having spent my early corporate years as a staunch defender of what's right, one who wore Superwoman bracelets and entered the fray fearlessly again and again to point out to the bosses the error of their ways, I remember the great adrenalin rush of heading into battle.

I still feel that adrenalin, but the passage of time has for the most part stilled my voice until the moment passes. Thankfully, I am able to push past all reason occasionally and make a fool of myself. I consider it a great opportunity to exercise my God-given sense of humor. I mean why would I have been given this gift if I wasn't going to need it so much?

Sure glad you were off wheat and tipped into such delightful madness. You are my new Holly Hunter — or to go further back maybe my Rosalind Russell, cracking wise. And Lucy ate a lot of crow and made us laugh til we cried.

Rage on — you are carrying the torch for funny women everywhere :)

Nancy, I'm with you: I prefer "to tweet", simply because it's short and sweet. It's also more efficient – it uses up fewer characters in a tweet.
