Are you prepared for the Internet Marketing Bubble to burst?

by Sandra Martini, Guest Blogger

Chances are, you’ve heard about the real estate “bubble” and frequent speculations about when it will burst throughout the years, but have you considered the “Internet Marketing Bubble” and what effect its burst will have on you and your business?

The Internet Marketing Bubble has come about for several reasons, the most prevalent being Internet Marketing’s low cost of entry/doing business compared with so many other business ventures.

As a result, over recent years, many internet marketers have focused on “how much can I charge for this” and constantly one-upping their peers or last program by consistently raising prices to see what the market will bear, that they’ve inadvertently alienated several segments of the market and haven’t adequately prepared for business once the current bubble bursts.

Given the “New Economy” we’ve been experiencing for the last 12-18 months, how soon until the Internet Marketing Bubble bursts?

While no one knows for sure, I think we’re starting to see the end of the trend and the burst will happen within the next year as clients and customers become more discerning about who they allow into their inboxes.

Are you prepared for the Bubble to burst?

  • Are you offering products and services at a variety of price points to make it easy for new clients to experience what you have to offer?
  • Are you getting the word out through different media?
  • Are you offering a variety of products and services in different markets or niches?
  • Do you have a strong marketing plan, backed up by concrete and doable actions, which will generate consistent revenue NO MATTER the economy?

If you’re not prepared, now is the time to put systems and plans in place so that you’re ready, no matter the economy.

Love this Blog Sandy and Nancy! I totally agree. Prices for programs have gotten crazy. I've paid for some of them. I've wondered if this isn't all one big Ponzi scheme that's going to collapse. Your advice is sound. Thanks for verbalizing what's been going on in my head.

I have to credit Sandy for consistently keeping us all rooted in reality while working towards our dreams!

I agree with you Sandra that the pricing on some things have gone way out-of-whack and your suggestions to get ready for the bubble bursting are good. Of course I especially agree with the one about it being essential to have a marketing plan!We need to start putting our eggs into some other baskets so that we're ready. Thanks for the insightful post!

But i don't think any of this means we have to water down our best offers… people are still buying and they're buying VALUE. So as long as we focus on that and excellent delivery, it doesn't mean to roll up all your high end offers.

  • sandramartini

ABSOLUTELY! There's nothing wrong with high end offers — people will always offer them and clients will always purchase them. As the host, you want to insure you deliver immense value. As the client, you want to insure you get the value you're paying for…and speak up if you have any questions.

  • sandramartini

The "trick" to navigating all the programs and offers out there is to know your business and yourself so you can get support in the areas you need most without being seduced by all the "bright shiny objects". And, on the flip side, you want to focus on what you do best and offer that in different forms and at different price levels so that your business is inclusive, rather than exclusive, of your client base.

  • sandramartini

Thanks Jody! Having an online business is like any other business…by listening to your clients and taking care of them (preferably WOWing them), you guarantee your long term success. And having a plan which insures this all happens like clockwork…a no brainer! :-)

Thanks for this interesting post Sandy and Nancy. Just wanted your opinion on one thought that came into my mind while reading it. Well I agree some things like workshops & online products might be overpriced. I would hate for small business owners to lower their prices on their services or products in this economy. I've always heard that's the worse thing that you can do, because then you don't have much money for your marketing budget.

I agree with Nancy's comment that as long as we're providing amazing value to our clients than that's the key. And also really like Sandy's point about having lots of different prices in your product offering.

Just wondering your thoughts on lowering your prices in a economic downturn?

Ok the title was scary but the topic was over my head… I'll browse around some of your other posts to get a bit more info about the type of marketing you work with to see how it relates to the charity online fundraising I work with.Thx

The internet marketing to burst? That will be the day. The author is right though that the internet marketers have been raising their prices that makes the small businesses just stay away. If the expense does not justify the income, then there is no sense throwing money away.Evelyn Guzmanhttp://www.homebusinesssteps.com (If you want to visit, just click but if it doesn’t work, copy and paste it onto your browser.)
