Is This Twitter or The Penny Saver?

classified ads

I was recently chatting with my publicist friend Shannon Cherry about how hard it’s been to find our old pals on Twitter. They’re there, but a logjam of spam tends to get between us.

There are days when I look at my Twitter stream and it feels like I’m reading the Penny Saver’s classified ads. Pitches, calls to actions, INCREDIBLE offers, LAST MINUTE deals… the selling is starting to outweigh the connecting.

As I shared in a well read post Hard Selling on Social Media: Just Say No! people are sick and tired of that approach… and there are over 50 comments to support the belief.

What people crave on social media sites is connection. A great analogy I heard recently is that if all you do is promote, it’s like walking into a huge room where everyone is talking… and no one is listening.

Take a moment to relax the need to push. Nobody wants a sales pitch shoved at them, so find what people DO want.

People want to be heard.

People want to be valued.

People want to connect.

Give the people what they want and they’ll love you for it. Get the people to love you and they’ll buy from you without the need to coerce or manipulate.

This is a topic I feel strongly about. If I can create a lovefest between me and my network, then you can too. You don’t have to dress up your tweets in smiley faces and !!! like I do (sorry, those are genetically pre-determined by my mother’s side of the family), but you have your special way of activating the love.

Here’s a great free resource: On July 29, my good friend Natasha Allrich will join me on a teleseminar where we’ll outline the The 4 Hidden Secrets to Turn Your Social Networking Visibility Into a Steady Stream of Profitability…

… without EVER Having to Push, Pressure, Spam or “Pitch”

Imagine making meaningful connections with ideal clients (the kind who love to buy from you and sing your praises hither and yon)

Imagine having people come to you saying “I see you on Twitter and I absolutely MUST work with you!”

Imagine knowing EXACTLY what to say to turn prospects into partners without ever having to sell.

That’s the soft sell approach and it works!

Join us on July 29 because the time has come to sell softer, not harder!

Excellent post. Give more value, the investment will be worth it.

Last Sunday I was talking about this exact issue with a colleague. I was sharing how facebook is becoming a larger part of my focus as Twitter seems to have lost much of it's ability to facilitate connections. It's just no fun to look at the penny saver.

Bonnie, I actually have a contrary view to the food tweets… depending on the situation and the person, those food comments can be great entryways for small talk that leads to bigger things. So don't write those off as useless…

Brian, you slowing down on Twitter? Give it another chance!! :-)

I'm such an advocate of the three "B's" that seeing them being mentioned, brought music to my ears. Yes, people want to B heard, B valued, B connected….and a big salsa-fest will be had by all. There's such re-assurance in doing business with the people that put our concerns to rest and won't ever have to think about those concerns again; which is part of the soft sell. Can't wait to hear you and Natasha today.

Psst: LuV what you did with the theme, "feel" and look of the blog. Super magnífico!

Thank you for this post Nancy. Recently I've been deleting friends in FB whose twitter posts (that also appear in FB) just clutter my feed with all the last minutes and incredible offers they send every 30 seconds, making it impossible for me to find out what's going on with other people in FB that I might interact.

I find that I'm not using Twitter as there seems to be just a cloud of marketing messages that nobody reads and the conversations go only between those who already know each other from somewhere else. Many people follow you only so you can follow them and get their ad 1,000 times a day.

To me, Facebook is a better place to build relationships with people you don't know, offer them what they need (not always what I sell) and overall, actually be seen. I feel that in Twitter I get lost in the crowd.

Nancy, I’ve heard people complain about the other end of the spectrum… reading tweets about what they’re having for lunch, where they’ve been or are going. That, too, is cluttering the tweet airways. I think the challenge of finding a meaningful mid-ground is a challenge facing many of us in all forms of media as we transition from the traditional forms of marketing ~ expensive, mass-media, push, interrupt, shotgun approaches ~ to ones that build relationships ~ where we get to know, like and trust each other, where we’re we’re able to personalize and target our messages. In other words, we’re evolving right before our very eyes. We crave connection, communication, collaboration. We need it. We have the language. We speak the words and believe them. And we’re searching for models of what they look like and sound like. I believe we’re talking about a change in consciousness and that takes awareness, intention, and a desire to discover new ways. Thanks for leading by example and encouraging us to do the same.
