3 Tips to Leverage Your Blog

rss_iconI’m a big fan of blogs and the way they help you leverage online visibility.

Unlike social media sites, a blog is your piece of cyber real estate, and no one can deactivate your account or suddenly change the terms of service on you. You own it and with that power comes the opportunity to direct how to leverage your blog for maximum results.
When used in conjunction with a strong social media presence, your blog can serve as a powerful tool to drive traffic, establish you as an authority, and bring new opportunities your way.

Here are 3 quick and easy tips you can start using today to get more traffic and visibility for your blog:

1. Import your blog to your Social Media Sites

Most social media sites like Facebook and Linked In allow you an option to import your blog so it automatically updates on multiple sites with no additional effort on your part. In Facebook, you simply go to “Notes” and import your blog from there. (You will need to know your blog’s RSS feed to do that). On other sites, you’ll look for an icon of your blog’s platform, such as WordPress, TypePad, or Blogger. Click that, enter your user information, and the rest is done for you.

2. Tweet your Posts

Links to blog posts (especially when they have great titles!) are an excellent way to bring traffic and provide great content for your followers. Next time you post on your blog, be sure to let your Tweeps know and provide an easy link to click on. You can automate this action also with a number of services. My favorites are HootSuite , Twitterfeed,  and SocialOomph (formerly TweetLater)

3. Invite guest writers

This tip merits an entire post (if not an intensive class) because it holds so much potential. The more your blog publishes, the more traffic you’ll get, especially when the content is rich with great keywords and consistent topics. Consider opening up your blog to include posts by other writers. They can fill in on the days you need a break. When you add the efforts of others, it leverages your time, visibility AND keeps the traffic flowing 7 days a week!

Your blog holds great potential, especially with the easy ways to leverage it with social media. There are many more things I can add to this list, but I wanted to give you a couple of easy to quick start action steps so you can begin enjoying increased visibility with less effort.

If you’d like to add more leverage tips or chime in on how any of these 3 strategies are working for you, please drop a comment!

Nancy–great tips. I find that my blog posts on Facebook get a fair amount of attention. Have you found a good way to get those who read your posts on Facebook to mosey over to your actual blog and comment there? Does it really matter? I'd appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks!

An additional tip: if you use Ezine or other article marketing sites, you can leverage your blog posts by transforming them into articles. Pick a few of your longer posts, tweak them so that they are refreshed, check titles and keywords and you have additional article marketing tools in your arsenal!

Great tips for the beginner and more advanced blogger alike as each can take the next step in moving their blog to the next step.

And you're so right, when your blog autoupdates your social media accounts, the blog post title is critical — it needs to inspire curiosity in order to be seen through all the *noise* and "get the click" while still being an accurate representation of the post content.

  • http://www.thesmallbusinessguru.com Melody Campbell, Bui

I like how you wrote that "a blog is your piece of cyber real estate". John Janstch of Duct Tape Marketing calls it the "hub" of your online business. I tell coaches it is the sign that says, "I'm open for business, and this is my message, method & promise."

Your blog shares samples of your business message 24/7. Comparing your blog & social media is like your home office vs a networking meeting – ya gotta have both. I like how you give tips to integrate the two.

Two additional tips to this great list is

    1. BE a guest writer on another blog with a link back to your own. While you're looking for guests for your blog, offer an exchange. This gives both of you a break and exposure. Repurpose existing content and personalize it for the blog you are guest writing for. Easy, peasy, lemon-squeezy!

    2. Develop the art of writing amazing and engaging comments on other people's blog. This get's you some great attention on other higher profile blogs where you might have to stand in line to be a guest post. Once I was the first comment to a post on Chris Brogan's blog. I mentioned another relevant blog post from another blogger – that guy of the blog that I mentioned called me and thanked me because he got hundreds of hits and new subscribers to his list. That's when I knew I was on to something. Commenting on other people's blogs is part of my daily strategy for exposure for my own blog.

    You sparkle & shine, Nancy!

Thanks everyone for the flurry of comments and I know many of you found your way here through a nudge via my ezine. So there's a traffic/leverage additional tip!

    Melissa:
If you're importing your blog to Facebook, there should be a link to the original post included there. You may have to include a line in your blog post that says "If you're reading this on Facebook, how about moseying over to my blog and sharing the love?" (That was in total Nancy-speak, you phrase it how you like!)

Linda: Stay inspired! We need what you have to offer.

    Robin: thanks!

Jeanne: Yes! Leverage into articles and definitely change the title and/or a few sentences so it doesn't pop up as duplicate content.

Sandy: The title is so essential, especially if you get your blog to feed into Twitter. Short, sweet, and seductive!

Melody: Thanks for adding in 2 more tips! Great and commenting on others blogs rocks. For everyone commenting on the Viva Blog, I use Comment Luv so it automatically links us back to your most recent blog post. It's all about sharing the love!

Thanks for both the reminders and new idea (guest blogger).

My blog is automatically fed to my favorite social media sites via WordPress plugins:

    Twitter: Twitter Tools plugin

I also like http://pingomatic.com/. It is a service that alerts approximately 25 search engines that your blog has been updated.

Thanks for these great tips Nancy! I have been thinking about guest blog posts lately! I have been discovering a lot of cool blogs lately written by other peeps who work with the "freaky folks" and have been loving what they share and can see the mutual benefit of having them share with my peeps. ( Thanks to your SSSM class…I have been all about connecting with these folks and have been enjoying the the relationships that I am forming.)

Nice tips Nancy. Setting up all of the pieces of your media empire to play together nicely is something that you do once and then it pays dividends over and over again.

Another advantage of guest posters is that they usually will promote their post on your blog. It is a great way to get your readers involved too.

LOVE your blog platform. The first time I submitted my comment, Internet Explorer disconnected me so I thought it didn't go thru, when I re-submitted it, your blog told me that it detected duplicate content. This is so cool. Is there a Smurffette hiding behind the blog walls? – Que barbaro. :)

Thanks for these tips – very helpful. However, I'm finding that the tip on importing your blog to facebook notes doesn't seem to work. Or at least, I have not been able to figure out where in the notes or fan page edit section you can enter your rss feed to get your blog to post on facebook. Any specific directions? Thanks for your always helpful advice!

  • http://www.VivaVisibilityBlog.com NancyMarmolejo

Celeste:Facebook has a HELP section that outlines this for you. Here's what I dug up:How do I import entries from an external blog?Facebook allows you to quickly and easily import an external blog from another website. On the Notes page, click the Import a blog link on the right side of the page.Enter the URL (web address) of your blog into the text box, and check the box underneath that states that you agree to our Terms of Use.To complete the process, click on "Save Settings." Once you do this, your previous posts will appear as notes and any new posts you make will automatically display.
