Rosie Grier Embroidery- definition of irony

Here’s an online visibility/sizzibility tip that ought to keep you on your toes. According to my 20 year old niece who is the be-all-end-all of all things cool and hip, irony is in.

Irony: a: the use of words to express something other than and especially the opposite of the literal meaning b: a usually humorous or sardonic literary style or form characterized by irony c: an ironic expression or utterance

Of course you’ve seen it all over, especially in the visuals used in advertising.

  • Hip slacker dude wearing a suit or a Geek Squad uniform. (So slacker yet brings in a paycheck!!)
  • Anything in the Legally Blonde series (she’s blonde and smart! OMG!)
  • Old Granny singing Rapper’s Delight in the Wedding Singer (If only my Granny were so fly!!!)

Look at football great Rosie Grier. Here’s a big beefy guy who was seriously into needlepoint and macrame. He wasn’t making fun of this stuff, the man was seriously into the crafting game. He’s the pinnacle of cool irony.

Now let’s get back to your sizzling online visibility.

I want you to consider adding a little irony to the mix to make you a little more interesting. Not contrived irony which is abundant, but something clever and interesting.

Before you start trying and skin a knee or something worse, simply spend some time observing irony in the world around you. Look it up on a search engine and try to catch its visual version in print advertising and television commercials. Watch and observe until Lesson 2.

Maybe you have some good links you want to leave in the comments or your own declaration to be more ironic. It’s up to you, the comment button awaits your genius! :-)
