Online Visibility Tip: Irony is In (Part 2)

Nixon and ElvisIrony and online visibility can’t be confined to a single blog post, so here’s Part 2 of my series.

In Part 1, we learned the definition of irony and how using a little unexpected cleverness can help your online visibility. Our goal is to make you more interesting, so keep that in mind.

Here’s part 2 of your irony homework. This is actually a strategy from the Sizzibility Files, so pay attention.

Irony is all about pairing up things that normally wouldn’t go together. The football player doing needlepoint is one. Richard Nixon appointing a well-medicated Elvis as an Agent-at-Large in the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs is another.

You don’t have to try to be funny or crude or step into something that you’re not, but the goal of this series is for you to look at some different parts of yourself, your business, or your brand and play up the irony of it to help you stand out.

One place to start is on the physical level. There may be something about you that really sets you apart physically or visually, but people would NEVER expect it from you. Maybe it’s your sense of style, the way you laugh, your height, or the way you slap your heels when you laugh. (I’ve got dibs on the Tall Latina niche!)

Another place to look is at your personal tastes and habits that may be surprising to others. My webmaster, Anita, is a tiny little thing who looks like she weighs 98 pounds soaking wet. But she is a big Harley enthusiast and takes off several times a year with her husband for heavy duty Harley runs. She does NOT ride on the back, which she proudly reminds others.

A third area to explore is your professional background. Have you reinvented yourself, changed fields, switched careers? If these are totally unrelated on the surface but give you a wealth of wisdom to draw upon, then why not play it up a bit?

Start taking an inventory of your many wonderful, surprising quirks. How many of them would be seen as unexpected by others? Which ones do you think you could draw upon to add interest to your brand, your business, or you as an entrepreneur?

Lesson 3 will talk about using social networking to really play up the irony and gain you more fans and followers.

Comments are always welcome. What are your wonderful ironic qualities that could add more Sizzle to your online visibility

Mira chica, with me, the irony is all about showing the intellectual cleavage…and the other one too:)-Who'd think I have a display picture in my office of me and the Chippendales in Vegas for my birthday? It raises visibility, and brows too:) Love your post!

    Wow, Nancy!

I guess I will stop hiding the fact that my background includes a BA in Mathematics from Rice University and that my first career was as a computer programmer.

It is ironic, since I am an extremely creative visual artist. But I got interesting responses when I revealed it as a "little known fact about me" last week.

Thanks for always being so helpful.
