Did you miss Tip 2? Read it here
Our pursuit of irony is intended to bring more Sizzibility to your online visibility and help you to stand out.
You can use social networking to reinforce this by letting people see interesting little nuggets of who you really are.
The ironic twist means putting something in there that people wouldn’t expect, but it ups the interest level.
Your social networking presence can help to test out concepts that may later develop into rebranding or sprucing up your online visibility. Here’s a quick list of Do’s and Don’ts for using social networking sites as a testing ground for your explorations into irony.
PHOTOS: When people can see you in action as a living, breathing person it breaks the expectation that you’re all business and no fun. Be careful not to lose balance or to publish photos you’ll later regret, but start thinking of ways you can use photos to say to the world “Hey, I’m pretty cool, check it out!” It may be snippets from your personal life or hobbies. Watch out for adding Too Much Information (TMI), things that can turn people off or create too much of a distraction. Check out how I use the Flickr Photostream on my blog, it’s a quick visual into little known facts of my life. http://www.VivaVisibilityBlog.com
CONNECT THE DOTS: You may gather your news and information from various sources- perhaps a few of them are unexpected. Look at ways you can link to interesting blogs or articles and tie them in to your area of expertise. Your job is to connect the dots for your readers. My friend Michele PW is brilliant at this. She uses her dog Nick to comment about the parallels between dog life and business. She also ran a story about business lessons she gleaned from KISS front man Gene Simmons. You wouldn’t expect business advice from an aging rocker, but life is full of surprises, isn’t it?
PERSONAL PROFILES: You always want to lead with who you are, how you help people, and who you work with. But tucked into that you want to sprinkle some interesting personal information about yourself. People are intrigued with little known facts, so why not use them to your advantage? When I started sharing that in addition to being a PR and social media strategist I’m an Aztec dancer AND a freakin’ tall one at that, people took notice.
Homework assignment: mine your life for playful irony. Are you a prim and proper lady who loves a good Cuban cigar? A serious business person who does stand up comedy? A jock who loves Jane Austen? Start looking into those wonderful quirks and see how they can enhance your Sizzibility.
