Pownce Is Shutting Down

The social networking site Pownce just announced its acquisition by Six Apart, the makers of Moveable Type, Type Pad, and Vox. Founder Leah Culver and her team will be moving over to work as part of the Six Apart engineering team. You can read an official announcement here on the Pownce blog.

If you’re a Pownce user, be sure to export your data and posts before December 15, 2008 using their export tool available at http://pownce.com/accounts/login/?next=/settings/export/

Pownce users got to share music, photos, messages, links, events, and more with the interface. The Pownce stream today is filled mostly with laments, some criticisms, and many good-byes.

Natural selection is taking its course in the world of microblogging and social networking. You can see the acquisition of Pownce as a smart business move on the part of the creators, or the inevitable thinning of the herd.

It will be interesting to watch if this will be a domino effect…
