The Secret to Online Video Success (Meow!)

Far be it from me to usurp my usual online video guest blogger Lou Bortone with an online video tip, but I made a startling discovery that must be made public.

I’ve found the #1 secret ingredient to online video success.

It’s not about a call to action, flashy graphics, power point, ustream, Justin.tv, or any technical wizardry.

It’s not about selling, subliminal suggestion, or celebrity endorsements.

No my friends, it’s a much smaller, cuter, fluffier, pitter pattering secret ingredient.

Awwwww! Cute sleeping kitty courtesy of www.geckotales.com

I’ll give you a hint: “MEOW”.

Yes, it’s about kittens. Sleeping kittens, sneezing kittens, hungry kittens, fighting kittens, cute kittens, funny kittens, adorable kittens, and playful kittens.

The proof? Just go to YouTube and do a search on any of the above phrases.

Average length of videos: 21 seconds.

Average number of views: MILLIONS.

And your carefully crafted, artfully produced 6 minute and 52 second sales pitch? 34 views  (and most of them were you clicking on yourself to watch, watch, and re-watch yourself.)

So should we all just go find a sleeping kitten, film it, then plaster our URL all over it?

Does everyone need to rebrand to something more felinesque?

There’s no solid answer to that. But look at what kitten videos give us and what we can learn from these YouTube phenoms:

1. Entertainment that crosses barriers.

I’m sensing that both Tea Party and Coffee Party die hards could easily drop their agendas for a moment and share a collective “awwww”. Whether you get your info from Fox news or Pacifica network, this is a bridge building approach.

2. Quick and to the point

There’s no build up, there are no intros. Just an entire 21 second clip of  a kitten sleeping.  People look at a video’s length before viewing it and decide if they have a whopping 4 minutes to invest or a what-the-heck-it’s-less-than-a-minute-so-why-not decision.

3. The title tells it all

Once again, you put “kitten sleeping” in your video title and your audience knows exactly what they’re going to get. Makes it easy for web surfers to click.

4. Niches Rule!

I’m sure you can search other animals sleeping, eating, playing, etc and find specialty areas on YouTube. What’s amazing are the sub-niches that pop up here. An entire camp of viewers just want to see the little fluffballs sleeping, others enjoy  “funny” antics (kittens clawing their way up someone’s pant leg… har har har?)

———-

So take a look at your approach to online video and see if there’s anything you can learn from the cat lovers. Be sure to leave a comment if you’ve gotten any “ah-ha” moments from this post!

And I know you’re jonesing for a cute kitty fix so here’s a classic: sleepy kitten that generated millions of views all from a 14 second clip. (If only my YouTube channel could get this many views!)

If it will work for sleeping (and snoring) Pugs, then I'm in business! Either than or I need to teach my cat to sell ebooks and teleseminars!Great post and great points…Lou

Lou, thank you for letting me tread on your turf! My daughter and I spent an hour watching kitty videos and I'm sitting here wondering how to grab some of those clicks. I think "cute kitten video" is the cyber version of "free beer"… grabs everyone's attention.:-)Nancy

Great post – although marketers need to be careful! While your marketing posts may only get 56 views they may actually get more conversions because they have something to do with your business. The real trick is to combine cuteness with relevance for your business so folks actually opt-in rather than just say "Aw!". Lots of folks with hundreds of thousands of views actually struggle to pay their bills (Its true!) because they missed this distinction. But getting the cuteness plus the conversion is the $64,000 trick.

Cuteness + Conversion = big money! Thank you Rob for rounding it out. So maybe that yawning kitten needs a thought balloon with "http://www.iHeartMyBiz.com" on it? Kinda getting Madison Avenue on us, huh? Meow!

I happen to know that people who love animals have very warm hearts … and there's a whole lot of us. If I were you, Nancy, I'd get that "iHeartmybiz" thought balloon above a sleepy kitty as fast as I could! :-)

Oh Nancy — I love this! Of course you can see from my new avatar that while I love cats and kittens (just ask my 20 year old Emma-cat) I lean to the canine crowd. Which is why I know that my niche includes dog-lovers, in fact, it's nearly impossible for me to effectively help/heal and work with people who don't 'get' dogs. Why? I don't know for sure. I'm not bigotted about non-dog-lovers, but I do share my home/office with two and they are a big part of my life, so even though I don't write copy to "dog-loving-women-service-preneurs who are ready to change the world" it seems to shine through. (Maybe I SHOULD write copy like that, eh?)Yes, my dog videos (when I was practicing with my new flip I took tons) seem to be most popular on my channel and I find that when my dogs are just in the background wandering around, sleeping, wrestling people seem to tune in more….good catch. you are so wise :) Peggie

Lou – -you know it's nearly impossible to convince your cat to sell anything unless you work out a lucrative affiliate agreement for her/him. Your pug — probably would do it for a chin or ear scratch. (Pugs are easy like that).

It's monetizing the hits that Rob Schultz says we need to go for. BTW, I love dogs too, just happen to have a cat in my life who doesn't share my feelings.:-)

I've seen some of these big traffic pet videos try to link to MLMs or something and it's kinda lame… Rob Schultz is right, there's got to be a connection.
