Taking Social Media Offline: How to (gasp!) TALK to Contacts

retro woman on phoneSocial media is phenomenal for connecting with prospective opportunities, but at some point you want to do more than Tweet your way into business with someone.

Consider having a getting to know you phone conversation with 1-2 of your social media contacts each week.

This is a smart social media strategy for several reasons:

1. It stands out: people will remember you for reaching out and taking the time to get to know them.

2. You’ll leave each call with important information. It could be “Wow, I just made the most incredible connection” or “Holy crap, that person is a lunatic!” All information is good information if you use it to direct your next move.

3. You get to practice giving first and being a good listener. The point of connecting with your social media friends offline isn’t to bombard them with your latest sales pitch. It’s to find out more who they are, what their business is all about, and ways you can support each other’s success. Ask open ended questions and put your agenda aside so you can listen and take notes.

4. You’ll have a better understanding of what type of opportunity this person holds for you. Not everyone in your network is a prospective client. Find out if this person could be a source for referrals, a potential joint venture partner, a connection to key people, or something else.

Recap: Set a goal to reach out to 1 or 2 social media contacts each week by having a voice to voice conversation. Remember, your goal is to get to know people and identify if you have opportunity potential. Approach it with a “give first” attitude, drop your agenda, and see for yourself the type of results you get. People who do this regularly (including myself) have tapped into lucrative opportunities, gotten new clients, sold more products, and increased their value to their network. It’s definitely worth 15 minutes of your time.

Drop me a comment: Give this a try and share your results here or if this is something you do or have done, tell us what you learned and how it benefited you.

According to Dun & Bradstreet, personal contact is one of the "7 Must of Marketing," therefore it is imperative that we move our online conversations offline. That way, we'll deepen our bonds with existing and prospective clients and partners. Good post!

    Warmly,

    Ron

  • http://www.vivavisibilityblog.com Nancy Marmolejo

Thanks Ron for sharing that. I notice that people are shocked and surprised to get on the phone but truly is a Must of Marketing as you pointed out. Social media gives us new ways to connect, now it's all about bridging the new ways with the old ways (like picking up the phone).

Lets not forget about social skills when meeting making contact with someone by phone.

Always introduce yourself, and let the person know where you met them.

Ask if the time is convenient, they may be busy.

    Keep the conversation short.

This is not the time to sell, it is the time to give.

    With Grace and Charm,

Hey Nancy, I agree, taking these conversations off-line is really key to having a real relationship. I've been thrilled to meet people live and in person off twitter & facebook such as Scott Stratten (@unmarketing) who has become a friend, Peter Cutforth (@petercutforth) who actually became a client, Carrie Wilkerson (@barefoot_exec) who became a marketing partner and tons more.

PS Any marketing strategy worth it's salt will include a step to move the prospect to a live converation of some kind. It's the BEST way to make sure it's a relationship that works for both parties.

    Great post, thanks for sharing!

    Hi Nancy,

Just curious as to what sort of response have you received from the people you have called? Are they shocked or do they know you are going to call?

I think it is a great idea and your post also reminds me to get back to basics. Some times those are the best principles and foundations for making new connections and as you said, potential new clients.

I believe I'm going to have to give it a try as well and see what happens. I love to talk so I'll have to remind myself to keep it short….lol….thanks for a great post!

I talk to 3-4 people a week that I meet on FB and Twitter…

They are flat out shocked that I actually answer my phone…

And that I am the "same" both online and offline…

    In this world of high-tech….

High-touch goes along way to moving relationships forward in a

    most positive way !!

You are so right saying that we must bridge the new with the old !!

I'm a fan of Face2Face – I encourage clients to get a list of local events, Chamber activities, Charities, etc., with same interests and let the networking-connections begin and yes, 2 to three max during each event, follow up with phone calls, cup of coffee, etc., and the results are amazing. You can also do the same thru social networks if you concentrate on one area. Almost 3 years ago I formed a panel of local professionals, i.e.: Banker, CPA and Biz Coach (me), and once a month, at no charge, we give meaningful, educational and sometimes, entertaining presentations to the business owners in our community right at the Bank that agreed to be part of the Panel. Amazing things have happened for all of us, plus our reputation continues to grow, not to mention our lists, and more clients. We also invite guest speakers with expertise in their fields and now we have a waiting list. They come looking for us! – So if you have an affinity for community affairs, and enjoy small to mid. size intimate gatherings, start your own panel! It's easier than you think and tons of fun.

Thanks Nancy, for bringing up the possibilities of the wonderment of voice2voice, face2face. Oh, by the way, I may start my own Ezine special section of: "Local News-Makers" by interviewing up and coming new businesses and community leaders. It should be interesting.

thanks for the great comments. Some thoughts:
Melanie, loved seeing you comment here, thanks so much! Love how you stay focused always on the win-win-win.

Deb: No cold calling! This is a way to move a conversation forward that started on a social media site.

Rose: What a great motivation to see your comment. I think others will feel called to step up after seeing you create 3-4 connections per week.

Ali: Of course this is a natural for you! People have to experience you live, there is no substitute.
    :-)

I must add, Nancita, that I actually did something in reverse. One of my presentations was about Social Media and more specifically Facebook. Amazing how many people had no clue what to do with it. It was a huge opportunity for me to create several classes at the local chamber to teach them how to start using Facebook for their businesses, and how to connect to others, start their own groups, local and otherwise, and even the local Chamber got on the Facebook Wagon to start attracting new members! So the whole thing turned into a "pay-it-forward" kind of a deal. Totally awesome, and the connections continue to increase. I've had folks from Flagler county (about 40 miles north from me) contact me thru Twitter because they saw my name mentioned in one of the FB chamber groups. I'm in amazement of the "awesomeness" of viral social networking, and to encourage others for the personal touch, PRICELESS!

Nancy, I LOVE this post! As a business owner, I cannot believe so many of our competitors do not even have a phone number listed on their business websites – in fact, it's like they wish to remain anonymous. Not us at Sparkle PlentY Designs!

We call – and speak – with our customers. We do business the modern way via emailm etc, and the old fashioned way of actually speaking to people (and we love it!) :)

    Stay Sparkly,

    Hi Nancy,

I was just being interviewed on a BTR show tonight with Brian Adrian. He asked me how I learned about social networking and I told him about your free download which walked me through tips for setting up FB, Twitter and FF.

We both discussed how you have been a valuable resource for social networking to the global community. Although I have never had a conversation with you, you have influenced me. During my interview I told Brian I would immediately let you know the inspiration you continue to be.

I agree that having the human touch of a conversation creates connections. I would love to have the opportunity to introduce myself to you sometime. Send me an email and let's set up a time to talk.

    Take care,

    Loren

I love this idea! Recently, I did a personal phone call to all of the new members to my website solution Websites 2 Grow. They were so surprised and thrilled by the call. I welcomed them and asked if they had any questions. I also got some great feedback on the emails I was sending out and new programs I was thinking about.

I also try to connect with my Twitter friends either via Skype or phone calls and it's been great. But I think the best thing ever was meeting tons of twitter friends at Scott Stratten's Tweetup in Vegas. Because of the social networking I felt like I knew everyone so well already. So you could skip the small talk. Great tips as always Nancy, Thanks!!

    Nancy,
I have two appointments this week with two of my Facebook friends. I am taking my online marketing offline. I think it’s cool and a great way to make new friends. I thought of this before reading your post. Great minds think alike.
