Nancy and daughter on 1st day of 1st Grade
Social media tips start to resemble the advice our parents gave us on the first day of school when you see how both situations are influenced by relationships.
If you’re using social media marketing to generate attention for your business and engage your followers, think back on what you learned at school and apply that wisdom to your business today.
Need a quick refresher? Never fear. I just sent my daughter off to her 1st day of 1st grade so I’m overflowing with hip motherly wisdom.
Read these tips and connect them to your social media efforts.
Nancy’s Social Media/ Back to School Gems
1. To Have a Friend, You Have to Be A Friend
You’ve heard that one a zillion times I’m sure, but it’s still true! Social media is built upon relationships and you must show people you’re willing to listen, share, and be of good cheer before you start asking for things in return.
2. There’s Enough For Everyone
Teacher’s holding a full box of graham crackers, assuring that everyone will get one… then some fear-based abundance-phobe pushes and whines that she didn’t get hers first.
Just like the full box of graham crackers, there are plenty of opportunities out there for everyone. When you differentiate your brand and your services clearly to a specific target market, you eliminate the competition. There’s plenty for everyone when you get clear on the results you deliver for a specific person/situation and use social media to forge relationships with prospects and opportunities.
3. Do Your Homework
Information is constantly changing and it’s nearly impossible to keep up with it all… but that’s no excuse NOT to be in the know. If you don’t have the time or inclination to keep up on topics using Google Alerts or other services, then have someone easily accessible who does and can provide you with the Readers Digest Condensed Version.
4. A Smile Will Go a Mile
Take a look at your social networking profiles. What kind of message are you sending out? Whether you’re friendly, funny, edgy, hip, cynical, or geeky, it’s important that you’re always APPROACHABLE. Don’t sacrifice expanding your opportunities by putting information or content that will scare people off.
So now that you’ve got your virtual backpack snugly fitted to your shoulders, lunch money is safely tucked into a pocket, and your bus pass is easily accessible, you may proceed to Facebook, Twitter, Linked In and all the other playgrounds.
