Stay Relevant: Update Your Message

in Online Branding & Visibility

Ballet dancers- from the littlest bunhead to the prima ballerina- all practice the same barre exercises. Master musicians still practice their scales, and writers write letter by letter.

Whether you’re a novice or at mastery level, staying sharp is essential if you want to stay on top of your game. And in this highly competitive world, add “stay relevant” to the top of your list for things to strive for.

Here are 5 questions you need to ask yourself at least once a year, if not more. If you answer “Oh, I did that 3 years ago, I already know all that”, then you are a high risk candidate for getting blown out of the water by the next big trend. It doesn’t matter how successful you currently are, staying sharp and staying relevant are key to your survival and, as you’ll see, for the delivery of your powerful message.

1. Who’s your ideal client/audience? How do you know that?

2. Where is your ideal client? Are you there too?

3. What’s your MESSAGE? Not a tagline, not a marketing schtick. Your MESSAGE- the important thing you have to share with the world.

4. How is your MESSAGE standing out so people hear, see, experience it?

5. What is absolutely, positively, the most important thing that your business accomplish this year… besides making money?

My blog readers are a very open and sharing group- I invite you to leave a comment below answering any and all of these questions.

Maybe you want to shout out to your ideal audience, maybe you want to shout your message to the masses via the comments below. It’s all good… your comments and input are what make this blog a great place for dialog.

Such an important message and too easily forgotten by many! I help my clients stay relevant too with their image! http://www.personalpowerimage.com
  • Hi Nancy,
Terrific article! I couldn't agree more about the need to stay relevant...Especially these days when everything keeps changing and advancing so quickly. And your list of questions is right on target.

I used to get upset when I realized I needed to change some aspect my business again to offer my clients and customer what they need most, take better care of them, and stay true to myself. Now I know that's the sign of a business that's likely to be successful for a long time.

Other small business owners should definitely be following your advice here. Thanks for sharing!

  • Staying relevant is a tricky concept... it needs to be balanced with wisdom and trendwatching.

    Excellent questions Nancy...
Thank you for sharing and I am cheering for everyone's success as we serve the needs of our world

  • Great post, Nancy! I've noticed that my ideal client has been changing as my business has evolved and grown. I'm in that "mid-stream" position, and we all know it's too cumbersome to market to two groups. I've been asking myself, "What a second .. who is my ideal client? And what is it *they" need."
  • I find it very helpful to return to this often, both the ideal client and the "what's my message" part. So who's your ideal client?
  • Carole Hyder
Congratulations on your honor. You deserve it. Great questions to ask again and again.

Great reminder Nancy. I know I've had to "re-up" my game multiple times and I'm in the middle of doing it again!

One of the things that I missed, that I'm now reconnecting to, is how easy it is to get swept up in a sea of "market positioning" and lose the thread of your authentic message.

If you are willing to challenge yourself with the great questions you posed, you can get back on track quickly!

  • Melanie, i absolutely LOVE what you're doing and watching you recalibrate has been an inspiration to so many! Thank you for the authenticity- the next wave of thought leaders dare to go out of the "paint by numbers" safety zone as you're showing so beautifully.
  • How timely! I've just been feeling over the last week or two that I need to get back to basics and ask myself those questions again. It could be something to do with me having had my twins 4 months ago and feeling like I need to simplify the business... :)
  • Marcia
Congratulations on having your twins! Re: simplify- It's really distilling your brilliance to its highest value and deepest essence- so I wish you much clarity as you get to that point. Nothing like a little person in diapers (or in your case 2 little people!) to help you reprioritize.
  • You always share such great information Nancy. Always always. I love the distinction you make between your message and a marketing schtick. I've been doing a lot of exploration around these things after rebranding last year ... so this year has been soul-searching, tweaking, tweaking, exploring, more tweaking, more exploring and tweaking.

    I *believe* my message is:

"Radiate your own unique spirit" and/or "Connect with the people you love working with"

... because I'm so passionate about people connecting ... and helping them to do that by expressing their spirit, just oozing out in the imagery I create for their logos and web sites. I know for myself, I spent well over 15 years trying to *hide* my personality, in order to serve what I thought was professionalism. So silly! Turned out what people loved about me *WAS* my personality and my spirit. Who knew! ;)

Ooh, I see a soapbox here, let me jump down. I get all excited about this stuff.

    1. Ideal client: life coaches, healers, solopreneurs. I know because I understand them, I ADORE them and I totally believe in the magic they create in people's lives! I love to team up and work one-on-one with somebody to build their business as opposed to when I used to work with corporations.

    2. Where is your ideal client? Hmmm ... good question. I tend to find them hanging out with other clients of mine. BUT I'm certain there is somewhere else that I could be looking!

    3. What’s your MESSAGE? "Radiate your own unique spirit" ... (that may need tweaking ;)

    4. How is your MESSAGE standing out so people hear, see, experience it? Hmmm... another good question. I'm thinking on this one ...

    5. What is absolutely, positively, the most important thing that your business accomplish this year… besides making money? Connecting with my favorite clients and supporting them in expressing their gifts. This aspect of my business has really been flourishing this year: my *ideal* clients finding me.

And I love it that I've begun looking at "prospect" calls not as "sales" but as exploring with someone, helping them to get clear on what they need and seeing if we're a fit. I call them pre-client chats and I totally look forward to them now.

Wow look at all of the thoughts you've inspired, Nancy! That musta been SOME great article! ;)

    Warmly,
    Col
  • Col... wow!!
    Wow.

    Wow

Say it, girl! I love everything you wrote and am so appreciative of the time and effort you put into this answer. I think you're inspiring everyone reading this thread.

You wrote that your ideal clients tend to be hanging around w/ your clients. That's very interesting. I think you're on to something big in the insights department. Please keep us all posted especially as you flesh out your message!!!
