The Social Media Success “Magic Question”

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could wake up everyday and face your social networking with a sense of clarity, integrity, and authenticity? You know what I mean: never feeling like you’re shouting to be heard or acting out for attention.

It’s interesting how regressive some otherwise nice people can get when pushed into the big sea of being visible on Facebook and Twitter. It’s like all confidence in the power of their message gets lost as they rely on pushy tactics to try to turn a fast buck.

Let me share a not-so-big secret with you: nobody’s interested in the pitches. As soon as someone senses a pitch coming at them, the walls go up and the bridge is closed.

We buy from people we know, like, and trust. That’s age-old wisdom and it’s just as true today as it was in the 50’s when my Dad opened up his first mom and pop business.

Then what is everyone out there looking for?

They’re looking to connect. They’re looking for value. They’re looking for honesty.

As an entrepreneur using social networking to market your business, you need to keep that in mind. So that leads up to the Magic Question for social media success.

Each day when you get ready to hop onto Twitter or scour Facebook for prospects, ask yourself this question:

How can I add value to my network?

What can I give that will inform, engage, connect, and build trust?

That’s it.

When you take that mindset on, the need to push or coerce vanishes. The value you provide- whether it’s retweeting someone’s post or offering your professional opinion- will set you apart as a credible person to be connected to.

There are other components of social media success, but having a value mindset is the foundation.

This focus on providing value  is what takes a person from random observer to raving fan to hot hot lead to ready-to-buy prospect.

So take a moment right now and ask yourself that magic question:

What can I do to add value to my network?

Then go over to Facebook or Twitter or Linked In and see how that question guides your actions.

I’d love to know your success stories or mindset shifts. Drop me a comment below.

  • Sometimes, I ask myself: "Can I be like Nancy?"

You always post thought provoking articles on your blog. ALWAYS. Yours is one blog that I ALWAYS read because you remind me to practice sound social media tactics.

Just this morning, the company that provides my cable called me to ask if I were happy with the service provided by the chap who popped by yesterday to replace our cable box. The company didn't have to call me, but they did.

I thought that was AWESOME. My internet went down, they sent someone to repair it and once I was up, I thought that was it. Then, they called this morning, not asking me to rate their service, but just to find out if I were happy.

I asked myself: "How can I provide this feel-good attitude to all those who connect with me on Twitter, Facebook, etc." Your post reminds me of what I should continue to do.

  • Leesa, having your respect means a lot to me as I'm a HUGE fan of your work.

Today Sandy Martini (@SandraMartini) led a call for my mastermind clients on what she calls The Client Journey. Wow! Follow up and warm touch points were interspersed with lessons on autoresponders and having a strong offer.

We are in the age of quality and value, people are just tired, tired, tired of the gimmicks and goo-gas. Those of us who've always practiced that are raising our voices louder and louder.

  • Nancy

I am new to social media, there just seems to be so much going on. Lots of info! I am not sure if it's my resistance to hard selling that stops me from any selling or if I am plain swamped with all that's going on!

And I cant help admiring people like you who have figured it all out and are helping others!

    thanks

  • Hmmm...On Twitter I think I'll consider..."What would Nancy do?" We could get bumper stickers or Facebook buttons made up!
  • Laura, somebody actually makes stickers now out of Tweets... how about that one? LOL! http://walltweets.com/ Would look good on your bumper right? :-)
  • This sounds like fun! And I love fun. Bookmarking your blog.
