Twitter Followers or Spollowers?

How many Twitter followers do you have?

Certain celebs have hundreds of thousands, while other Twitter “elite” boast tens of thousands. While most social media gurus agree that it’s not all about the numbers, I’d be willing to bet that you’d like to have more rather than less Twitter followers. C’mon, who wouldn’t? After all, in order to market our businesses, we need to reach people – and more reach means more influence. So you could argue that, from a marketing standpoint, Twitter is a numbers game.

I want my message to reach as many people as possible, even if that message is only 140 characters long. And I have to admit, when I’m considering a joint venture or strategic partnership, I always check to see how many followers my potential partner has. If it wasn’t important, would book publishers be asking their authors how many Twitter followers they reach? Bigger is always better.

Or is it? Let’s take a closer look. Big numbers are great, but just who are your followers? I decided to do a little digging on my own Twitter account to see the names behind the numbers. This was an eye-opening experience, as I discovered a huge amount of spam followers, or what I now call “spollowers!”

Spollowers are junk numbers, or what could be considered useless followers. We want to reach people, not bots! More important, we want to reach people in our target market. A quick review of my followers reveals way too many MLM tweeps and poker accounts. Something tells me that “Play_Pro_Poker,” “PokerNetStar,” and “PKRPokerPro” are not going to be visiting my website or buying any video courses anytime soon. And don’t even get me started on those “whiter teeth” tweeps!

The point is that all the spam and spollowers may be skewing your numbers. If you really want Twitter quality over quantity, it takes time and effort. You can’t put your Twitter account on autopilot and expect ideal followers. I’m at the point where I manage much of this manually. I cherry pick many of the folks I follow, and I review my followers to purge the junk. It’s more work, but ultimately I know I’m reaching followers, not spollowers! So how many followers do you really have?

  • Lou, I loved the numbers at first and then as I began to really look at my followers I realized that many were spollowers. It takes some time, but is well worth the effort to clean up our lists.

Thanks Nancy for the post! I look forward to your follow up post.

  • You are brilliant, Lou, simply brilliant. We all needed to hear this!!!

    Presto, bello:)

  • Lou, I couldn't agree with you more! It has taken me quite some time just to get the small group I have right now. You might say I have a list of criteria that determines if I want to follow, ignore or block my followers. I had a follower recently who claimed he had the magic ticket to getting 5000 followers a week on Twitter. When I looked at his following, he had less than 150. Let's just say that he shares a special place with the porn stars on my blocked list.
Thank you Terri Z for the @Spam info! That's good to know.
    Great post Lou...it was great!
And thank you , Nancy, for all you do!
  • Thanks for the comments! I have to admit that I'm a reformed numbers chaser. But once I dug in and saw how freaky some of those followers were, I started manually pruning. (Sorry @sweetbuns101, that's not my cup of tea!) I've still got plenty of spollowers, but I'm blocking more every day.

BTW, if you liked this post, you'll LOVE my new Twitter parody song at: http://bit.ly/jyyx4 (With apologies to Bob Dylan!)

    Thanks,

  • Hi Lou,

I couldn't agree more! In addition to the "Spollowers", we have those who fell in love with Twitter for oh, say a day, and then never posted again. Let's call them the "1 Tweetollowers" (after 1 Hit Wonders) -- more fluff and junk in our Follower figure.

Once again, it comes down to quality, not quantity.

    Thanks for a great post!

  • Lou, you really hit a nerve! Thanks for the great post. And appreciate everyone's comments. I have a follow up post coming soon, wanted to share some of my guidelines for pruning the list.
    :-)
  • Truly hard to get Twitted follower. The best we can do is to get an update everyday (much better) and have some good article to make people like you. Well about the Spollowers, it really hard to deal with them because not only they are like scum bags but they do it to earn money that is why they exists in every twitter account. I only wish for Anti Spollower Software so we can block and ban their IP forever.

  • So true, Lou! I'm not sure it's worth the time, but I've also started blocking those folks who engage in another form of Twitter spam -- sending a message with a stupid link (usually about some big $$$ affiliate program or how to get more Twitter followers!) and adding the @names of several unrelated people. Ugh!

Oh, and don't forget folks...if you find what you think is a Twitter spammer, report them. Follow @Spam, wait for them to follow you back, then DM the names of spammers. Twitter eventually removes these junk accounts.

  • Great post. I noticed this problem as soon as I opened my Twitter account, RawDesigner. Although there isn't much harm from spollowers, I agree that it's worth some clean up time, so you can measure the growth in real followers. Thanks!
