Twitter Responses to Marketing Around Economic Fears

Last week I started a discussion about people who are referencing the current economic crisis in their sales and marketing.

Before I published that blog post, I posted this question on Twitter:

Here is a sample of how people responded. Draw your own conclusions (and I haven’t even shared the Facebook results with you yet!)

Biana Babinsky
BianaBabinsky @NancyMarmolejo, re: economy in sales letter, yes and no, i think it really depends on how u use it
orinw
orinw @NancyMarmolejo Most has been positive in dealing with the financial crisis for example Frank Kern – http://masscontrolsite.com/…
Debbie JordanKravitz
organizergal @NancyMarmolejo YES! We ALL know there is crisis. Telling me about it is insulting, selling with it is oportunistic.Makes me stop listening.
patweber
patweber @NancyMarmolejo reference to financial crisis in sales promotions. isn’t it Cialdini’s Social Proof?
Kendall SummerHawk
KendallCoach @NancyMarmolejo Depends on the marketer’s previous messageangle. Just jumping on “economy’s bad-time to get into Law of Attr” is turnoff.
Lisa Call
sunshinerawtism
sunshinerawtism @NancyMarmolejo I get turned off, completely. If you want to talk to me about growth and opportunity, I’m all ears. If it’s lack, I tune out
Adrianne Machina
amachina @NancyMarmolejo Mostly turned off – except when something really is a recession-proof strategy. I’m shutting out all that negative muck.
KidsAwakening
KidsAwakening @NancyMarmolejo Yeah, I’d say turned off. You get what you focus on, so I want to focus on abundance in my messaging and in my intake
Jesse P. Luna
jesseluna @NancyMarmolejo I think “tough financial times” is pretty much understood. The value and relevance of service/product is the important part
sarahnewton
sarahnewton @NancyMarmolejo totally…I prefer to have an abundant mindset for every high there must be a low….everything is about balance..

These responses show me a couple things:

1. The majority of people who answered are turned off by this type of marketing

2. You can get some pretty fast answers from the Twitterverse!

3. Asking questions is a good way to find something out. (They say this EVERY day on Sesame Street!)

4. I have a better understanding of how my contacts feel about this issue.

Pretty cool, huh? What are your thoughts?

Very enlightening post! As a service provider, I see a fine line as to what can be opportunistic versus how to help businesses achieve their goals in difficult times.

Great use of Twitter to gain insight into how others see it!

Nancy — your info is always timely and relevant and thanks for that! : ) As for the "doom and gloom" marketing — clearly as a Spiritual Life Coach — I choose VERY CAREFULLY what I want to listen to and input into MY reality! And MY reality says that the world is an abundant, safe and happy place — and so it is . . . for me at least! : )

    Blessings!

    Hi, Nancy,

Once again you've got the finger in the collective pulse.

As we've talked before, the worn-out tactics of what I call the "Product Pushers" are transparently manipulative. I sometimes dread opening my email to hear "Maria, want to…" Maria, you won't want to miss…" "Psst, Maria, do you know the secret to?…"

It feels that there are hundreds of people pulling my skirt, screaming "buy, buy, buy!" I delete them automatically, in mass.

Guess the ones I don't delete. I have about a dozen business persons who regularly sent me messages that uplift and inspire me. Sometimes they are quotes or positive stories. I feel personally connected to this people. I regularly visit their sites and that's where I go when I need those kinds of services. Of course, I am not an impulse buyer. I have a plan and strategies, so I am going to buy when I am ready, not when I am scared. After all, isn't this the way to do business?

There are also about 4 ezines I rarely miss reading. Yours, Nancy, is one of them. They provide true value in and by themselves. They are alive. They connect to me at a real level. These are the emails I value and when I am ready to buy, it is to this people I go, as I have done with your services.

Why? Because these people are REAL and see me as a real person, and have sustained a REAL relationship with me. You simply can't fake this. Either you care and connect, or you just pretend to. Either way it's transparent.

    Oh, yes, the scarcity/fear tactics.

Again, your true color shines for everyone who has eyes to see. When you send these tactics, as with all others, may I remind you that hundreds of others are doing the same. Think of your potential client as a human being inundated with emails that trigger her fears. What will she do? Click in each of the hundreds "Cry Wolves" and buy it all? Hardly desirable, if at all possible.

I would go off to meditate and send the whole bunch of opportunistic Product Pushers to clean the bowels of hell.

On the other hand, when someone sends me support, tools and true help that are communicated with sincerity, then it may be just what I need. And I will be eternally grateful to them. One does not forget those who wants feels grateful to.

The minute the debates and financial crisis began to trigger massive fear response, I sat down in my computer and began to write a series of articles and to compile a series of resources. In them I talk about how the Fear Reflex works and how to release it. I offered tips on how to act with power in the midst of fear. I found websites and sources of alternative analysis and support. They are all free at my blog.

So, yes, I am not making money off this scary situation. And that's fine with me. I don't want to use my clients' fear to sell. I want to offer them support for them to return to center. When they need my services, they know where to find me.

Maya Angelou said something that I remember every day. "People may forget what you said. They may forget what you did. But they will never forget how you made them feel."

Do you want to be associated with feelings of fear and chaos? Or with peace and well being? It's your choice!

    Light and love,

    Maria Mar
