Before I published that blog post, I posted this question on Twitter:
Question: R u turned off by references to the financial crisis in sales promotions? Is it good news piggybacking or tacky opportunism?
Here is a sample of how people responded. Draw your own conclusions (and I haven’t even shared the Facebook results with you yet!)

BianaBabinsky @NancyMarmolejo, re: economy in sales letter, yes and no, i think it really depends on how u use it

orinw @NancyMarmolejo Most has been positive in dealing with the financial crisis for example Frank Kern – http://masscontrolsite.com/…

organizergal @NancyMarmolejo YES! We ALL know there is crisis. Telling me about it is insulting, selling with it is oportunistic.Makes me stop listening.

patweber @NancyMarmolejo reference to financial crisis in sales promotions. isn’t it Cialdini’s Social Proof?

KendallCoach @NancyMarmolejo Depends on the marketer’s previous messageangle. Just jumping on “economy’s bad-time to get into Law of Attr” is turnoff.

lisacall @NancyMarmolejo Complete turned off. Feels opportunistic.

sunshinerawtism @NancyMarmolejo I get turned off, completely. If you want to talk to me about growth and opportunity, I’m all ears. If it’s lack, I tune out

amachina @NancyMarmolejo Mostly turned off – except when something really is a recession-proof strategy. I’m shutting out all that negative muck.

KidsAwakening @NancyMarmolejo Yeah, I’d say turned off. You get what you focus on, so I want to focus on abundance in my messaging and in my intake

jesseluna @NancyMarmolejo I think “tough financial times” is pretty much understood. The value and relevance of service/product is the important part

sarahnewton @NancyMarmolejo totally…I prefer to have an abundant mindset for every high there must be a low….everything is about balance..

These responses show me a couple things:
1. The majority of people who answered are turned off by this type of marketing
2. You can get some pretty fast answers from the Twitterverse!
3. Asking questions is a good way to find something out. (They say this EVERY day on Sesame Street!)
4. I have a better understanding of how my contacts feel about this issue.
Pretty cool, huh? What are your thoughts?
