Believe it or not, there are entrepreneurs out there (really successful, confident people) who eschew the spotlight. They think it’s somehow different than other forms of marketing. “Gee,” they say to me, “I’m just not ready for that.”
So I usually ask them to define “that.”
“Oh you know”, they reply, “all that fame and attention.”
For some reason they believe that media attention is going to create a negative effectin their lives.
Now this gets me to thinking: marketing is about getting noticed by your target market. People write articles, use social networking, enhance their websites, put on teleseminars, write blogs… all so they get noticed. What is it about media attention that suddenly turns many confident marketers into freaked-out defeatists?
In short, it has to do with two things:
1) NOT having a clear vision of how media attention (aka “f-r-e-e advertising”) can help their business
2) NOT understanding that media can mean anything from the local paper or a barely heard internet radio show to Time Magazine or Oprah. (No, you won’t have to walk around in dark glasses escaping the paparazzi after you’ve been quoted in a niche magazine.)
To help you though this, I invite you to try this visioning. Grab a piece of paper and answer the following questions freely and without censoring yourself. To extend this concept, you may want to make a vision board or a visualization to anchor in the results you want for yourself.
Take a moment to relax and step into a place of unlimited possibility.
Holding that vision of possibility, write about it like it’s already happening. Picture yourself already having achieved what you want and describe it in detail or sketch it out.
When we stay in a place of possibility and put media attention into perspective, we’re able to utilize a phenomenal marketing tool in a way that works for us.
